It’s not Spring just yet!
Winter fatigue and short days are still here. Shorter days mean commuting and working in low lighting and poor visibility. For those whose jobs are mainly indoors, you arrive in the early morning when it is still dark and leave when the sun goes down or even after sunset. The lack of sunlight and low lighting might cause fatigue and a foggy mind. Be aware of this and stay safe when driving or working before or after sunset.
Be careful working in low light, including outside at our customers’ work sites. Be mindful of people around you and know they are experiencing the same light issues. Wear a reflective shirt or vest when in the dark and a bright shirt to be seen in the light. We need both as we sometimes walk from a well-lit area, such as a fueling canopy, to a dark, unlit tank pad. We are often in both a well-lit and a very dark area.
At this time of year, lighting is not the only issue; we must also factor in the hazards presented during winter weather. Freezing temperatures, ice, snow, and wind can raise issues, and as we transition from winter to spring, thawing snow and rainwater need to be considered. Wet roads, walkways, and entryways become slick for boots and tires.
Many times, the best way to be safe is to slow down a little. You don’t need to stop or go at a crawl; slow down and look before stepping onto ice or into traffic. Don’t let yourself be distracted when the focus is needed on a tool or driving a vehicle.
