West Region Update – Sid Jenkins

As I travel through the Southwest visiting our West Region Branches, I have the added benefit of experiencing a variety of landscapes. While I was leaving Phoenix recently, it was late in the afternoon and the sun was accenting the miles and miles of Saguaros ahead of me. This iconic symbol of the American West usually shows up in old western movies and you will see a lot of souvenirs and postcards with images of this cactus across the Southwest.

Saguaro, pronounced suh-waa-roh, is a tree like cactus that only grows in the Sonoran Desert. It’s a slow growing cactus that might only grow 18” in the first 10 years. Saguaros can grow 40’-60’ tall and many live to be 150 – 200 years old. It can take up to 75 years for its first arm/branch to grow and it can have more than 25 arms during its lifetime. The benefits of the arms on the Saguaro are that they enable the cactus to reserve more water, give it balance and stability and allows it to produce more flowers and seeds. This huge cactus gets more resilient as it grows and can survive the worst of droughts and extreme temperatures.

Thinking about the Saguaro made me reflect on the growth of our company. D&H United started out as a single office over 50 years ago. Today, branches are sprouting up in new areas along with new segments.   D&H United offers so much more today with service, construction, equipment, environmental, EMV, automotive, electrical and tank & line testing. Like the giant Saguaros, D&H United has stood the test of time and has grown stronger, more balanced, and resilient through the years.
