Essential Safety Precautions: Working in the Heat
Whether you work indoors or outdoors, taking extra safety precautions in hot weather is crucial. Here are some key points to keep in mind:
New to the Heat?
50 to 70% of outdoor fatalities occur during the first few days of working in a hot environment. Your body needs time to adjust, which typically takes a few days.
Hydration
Have cool water available, drinking eight ounces every 15-20 minutes. Start hydrating the day before and continue throughout your shift. Opt for electrolyte drinks over energy drinks.
Acclimatization
Begin with short working periods and frequent breaks, gradually increasing work time over three to four days. If you’ve been away, re-acclimatize upon return.
Meals
Eat smaller, more frequent meals rather than large ones. Be mindful of medications that may dehydrate you; consult your doctor if necessary.
Recognizing Heat-Related Illness
Move to a cool area and cool down if symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting, fainting, or seizures occur. Seek emergency medical help if necessary.
Stay safe and prioritize your health when working in hot conditions.
